Project Highlight
I took on a dual role as Executive Producer and 1st Assistant Director for a voluntary short film part of Newcastle Film Club, working alongside Samantha Castro-Leddy (Executive Producer) and Duncan Falconer (1st AD). The film follows a man learning survival skills on an island, though not everything is as it seems. This was a highly ambitious project, requiring strong leadership and organisation to ensure smooth production from pre-production through post-production. With no financial incentives for the team, keeping morale high and ensuring that all departments remained engaged and aligned with the film’s vision was a key challenge.
As Executive Producer, I was responsible for overseeing the film’s overall production alongside fellow Executive Producer Samantha Castro-Leddy to manage the crew application process overseeing how the leadership team selected individuals for specific roles they applied for. I facilitated team cohesion by scheduling regular meetings, assuring all Heads of Departments (HODs) were aligned and had the necessary information and documentation to execute their responsibilities which included handling the logistically paperwork including call sheets and to make sure that each HOD met with their teams and had clear directives on handling their departments from pre-production to post-production. I also worked alongside the Director Andy Robson and DOP Alex Challies to make sure there was the appropriate amount of break time for the cast and crew and to maintain a proper schedule.
On set, I worked alongside Duncan Falconer as 1st Assistant Director, ensuring that the shoot progressed smoothly while keeping the Director and creative leads focused on their vision. I carefully managed the production schedule to make sure all departments worked in sync and that each shoot day was executed without unnecessary delays. Beyond the logistical side, I also prioritised crew welfare, making sure that everyone was well-fed and had a supportive environment where they could voice any concerns. Maintaining high morale in a voluntary production was crucial, as motivation was driven purely by passion and teamwork rather than financial incentives.
Despite the challenges of running a large-scale, unpaid production, the team remained motivated, engaged, and committed throughout the process. The strong organisational structure I put in place ensured that all departments operated like a well-oiled machine, allowing for a smooth transition from pre-production to post.
The film was successfully completed, showcasing a polished, professional outcome that reflected the dedication and collaboration of the entire crew. The film further went on to get an Official Selection at Sunderland Shorts 2023 and an Official Selection at Newcastle International Film Festival 2023
